Boxing: One fight away from the mainstream or downstream?

Well there we have it. As expected Manny demolished a disinterested Shane Mosley, who appeared to be there to cash in a rater large cheque (5 Mil, pretty nice for a game of dodge fist).

Shane (nicked named Shame in some circles) was a complete disappointment and now our attention turns to the only fight left worth watching:

Pacquiao vs Mayweather, and for a minute it looked like it would happen. Pacman agreed to the drug testing stipulations set by Mayweather and a massive purse (something like $50mil!) but at the last moment Mayweather backed out.

My question is, is this the only fight left for boxing? Can it bring it back from the brink of obscurity? Or is the prolonged delay the final death bell for boxing. Currently, as combat sports fans, we are spoiled for choice and I for one rather be watching fantastic MMA fights than waiting for this fight.

What are your opinions?

I honestly don't know much about boxing the sport, but I managed to catch that pac v. mosley fight and it did kind of strike me as a bit off.

Oh well, I enjoyed reading this entry. Have a good one.

Street fighting MMA will never replace boxing.

Boxing is a "gentleman's" sport. And, yes, I would much rather watch MMA.

Boxing is pretty awesome, but I haven't watched it in forever so I can't really answer your question.

MMA is the way to go as there are so many unique fighting styles involved and different martial arts for every fighter. Plus watching it is way more exciting than following round after round after round of normal boxing. And I agree that boxing is rather a gentlemen's sport.

I boxed for a couple of years, spared with the South Australian welterweight champion. Never saw the appeal of MMA though, but it definitely seems more popular these days.

Exept some boxing fights happening in Montreal, the only other boxing match I'd watch would be this one!

I think for this fight to happen, Pacman needs to just call out Floyd for ducking him. Thus far, he really hasn't said much making me think that maybe Pacquiao is just as scared to fight Floyd.

Just make it happen guys.
